What you have described cannot be directly attributed to the 815
chipset. The 81x chispet family is known to cause problems in
configuring X Windows and audio - and that too was due to lack of proper
drivers. After Intel released the data sheets, etc. for the chipset,
drivers have been written and improved upon - though they still need
some fixes.
Internationally (at least in the US), motherboards based on Intel 810
chipsets (also SiS 630) with Integrated graphics and audio controllers
are considered to be the low end and cheaper solutions so normally
people don't prefer them while they are sucessful and very much in
demand in India and other countries for the same reason (low price).
The installation problems faced by you can be because of many other
reasons like 1024 cylinder barrier, bad hard disk, etc. What was the
linux partition size you initially worked on ?
I would like to hear from others on this topic.
