There are two parts to the problem. First suck runs to get the news from the remote
server, and the next is suck hands over the news to the local innd. So innd needs to
be running with ability to accept postings from localhost (or your local machine or
the machine where suck is running which may be a different machine). For this you
first need to setup innd to accept postings for the newsgroups which you want on the
system. So you do need thoose entries in the active and newsgroups files, at least in
the groups file. Get a copy of the files from where the innd FAQ suggests (don't have
the docs right now), not necessarily from your upstream server unless you need special
groups propagated by that server itself (in that case add those groups to the files
you download). Now put the groups you want (be careful if you're on low bandwidth) in
sucknewsrc and get them from your upstream server. AFAIR the control group is actually
required for sending control messages between the servers or communicating software,
so you need to have it in your active and newsgroups files, but it is not necessary in
sucknewsrc. AFAIR there can be problems for innd to accept news from suck if the
control groups are missing.
innd is quite a complex topic but as the mega FAQ proclaims (truly) nearly everything
is documented. You need to read all of it lightly at least once and then go over it
again like a reference manual. Also the manual page of suck is reasonably good.
best wishes,
Indraneel
