But on linux you *can* hack! Look at Windoze from that perspective. If
something is broken, it's broken. There's no 2 ways about it. On Linux, most
things *are* logical and funcional. The machine hangs rarely - if ever. If a
program doesn't work, you can rule out the OS as the cause almost 99% of the
time. Compare that to Windoze, where crashes happen arbitarily. You're never
really sure if the application is broken, or the OS.

Is it possible that you have a conflicting IRQ/DMA ?

I have a very bad feeling that you're using a faulty motherboard or
something.

The future you see is from your persective. From where I stand, ever since I
stopped using Windoze, *my* productivity has gone up sharply. Now I only
reboot my machine when *I* want to! :) Look, you really don't need to be a
'geek' to use Linux. It's nice. Linux is one OS that actually is 'logical'.
Like a reboot won't make the problem go away. I can't convince you. It's your
choice. The people on the list aren't here to really 'propogate' linux. It's
their choice as well. We're here because we find that Linux is good and hope
that we can help you enjoy this OS the way we do.

Maybe it's time you looked a bit critically at your hardware.

You can get a copy of Mandrake 8.0 7.2 is great and if that is still flaky
with your hardware, maybe 8.0 can fix it. But if your hardware is really
flaky, then no distro can fix it - no matter what. So before you go about
blaming the OS, please make sure that your hardware is functional - proper.

BTW, a D-link 56k external modem should work perfectly! Try using wvdial
(with wvdialconf for auto configuration)

Yes, I'm also aware that your WindowsME might be working perfectly. So your
hardware is good. We're no wizards here. We help the way we can. The rest you
have to do on your own. If you can't use the help you get here, maybe you
need to get someone over who's confident enough to kick your computer's butt
and get the bloody thing to work. I'm sure that's possible. If you're in
Pune, I'll be glad to come over and fix your computer for you - if only to
prove to you what a cool OS Linux really is!

This is a long mail - I know, but I couldn't help it. Sorry.
