well thats where (hacking) lies the weakness of linux.
i would consider myself a relatively knowledgeble user
of the computer. even though i'm rather new to linux,
i've done a bit of research into my problem. in fact i
went to IT.COM (bangalore) last november just to get a
copy of RHL7 and get my i810 working. at the expo
people from this list were demonstrating how to
configure i810 on RHL7. it worked perfectly there. but
when i got home and went through the same procedure it
didnt work.
so i contacted Archan Paul who was kind enough to
gimme a copy of mandrake7.2. again i got home and
installed it. my videao card worked fine. but the
sound card workied from time to time (literally). and
i could never get my net connection to work.
whatever help i got from this list was of no use as
nothing seemed to work. i knew there was something
wrong but i didnt know what. i had got the very same
modem to work on the very same net connection with
redhat6.2. the soundcard worked from time to time.
now if there cant be a distro that cant get this
working where does the future of this OS lie? if it
lies only in the hands of "geeks"... then i dont see a
bright future for it. however much i want to be part
of this movement i cant!
this is not a problem i've faced for a short while.
its one that i've faced since PC quest gave their
first copy of linux.
Now based on my experience as narated in my long
mail, please suggest me a distro that will get me a
working linux without making me stay up all night
"hacking" it.
Thanks in advance... Sukrit.D.
PS: here's my configuration : i've got an i810 based
board. 128mb of ram, 20GB HDD, win ME on 7GB, 6 GB
fat32 data storage, 7 for linux(currently with
mandrake 7.2), and a D-link 56k external modem...

I think that a claim that the distribution fails - is
a rather strong
statement. I have configured sound and X on an i810
rather trivially. Just
because your hardware isn't supported out of the box
doesn't mean that the
distribution lacks... Maybe you just need to put in
more work on getting it
to work... :)
The newness of a distribution really doesn't spell
it's worth. After all it's
mostly built off things you can find on the net and
configure yourself! So no
matter what distribution you're using, a little bit of
hacking, and I'm sure
you can get most things to run rather well on linux.
My opinion only.

p.s: Rgd configuring sound and X on an i810, look on
the net. Do a google
search. They're lots of pointers to get it to work -
you just need to look!
