Linux has never been a "for dummies" OS - nor has any other unix.  It was, is
and will remain a power user's desktop / workstation / server.

As for applying linux to our lives - 

* Your email / website etc are hosted on linux boxes

* Some movies you see have linux behind them (for ex: the beowulf clusters used
by Industrial Lights and Magic

* Lots of agricultural etc records are stored on linux / other unix machines,
and made available at public access terminals around India - the simputer
will help a lot in this respect ...).

* Someone (I think CV Radhakrishnan) posted that a major newspaper uses linux
for production / editing.

* A major hotel group (Taj I think) uses linux for backend processing ...
