Can you try out a full POP3 session on the terminal with the POP server?
If you want to try:
You are the client 'C' and 'S' is the server. Normally server responses will
vary with regards to the content, but simple +OK -ERR are tell you if you
have a problem. Try out a session with the server and maybe you can figure
out why it's throwing you out.

$ telnet <pop3-host> 110
S: +OK blah blah
C: user <your username>
S: +OK
C: pass <your password>
S: +OK
C: stat
S: +OK blah blah
C: retr 1
S: +OK blah blah
<Actual  mail body>
..
C: quit
S: +OK blah blah

Methinks there's something wrong with your fetchmail setup. Try running it
with the -Nv options. You should see exactly why it's throwing you off..

HTH,
Faisal.
