The address space available to the OS.
32bit OSes use 32 bit addresses
64bit OSes use 64 bit addresses

Depends on the CPU, The 386/486/P1/P2/P3/P4 CPUs are 32 bit and so Linux
is 32bit.
The Itanium is 64 but and ia64 Linux is 64 bit.

Windows (W9x,NT,2000,XP) are 32 bit. Whistler has both a 32bit version and
a 64bit version.
