The kernel compilation part is the easiest on Debian :-)

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
make-kpkg -revision=1.0 kernel-image

u get a nice deb file with your customised kernel and than just install
that deb file with dpkg -i kernel-image.deb :-)
