Yeah, what I had done was:
   1. Installed RH6.2 with kernel 2.2.14
   2. D/l 2.2.16.rpm
   3. rpm -ivh ..2.2.16.rpm
That worked without a hitch. Updated lilo.conf, and simply
                start using 2.2.16. :-) Was very simple,indeed.

And Debian. It's one of the best, I feel.
  make-kpkg <kernel-image> leaves a nice .deb, dpkg -i that,
which will install the kernel under /boot, update the /vmlinuz
symlinks, install modules under /lib/modules, and ask you two
questions - If you want Lilo upgraded(Y/n)
If you want boot floppy to be created for the new kernel.

I think no other distro can do that. Though Debian is said to be the
toughest, I feel it is not too had to install and use Debian.
It has got the all-time great apt-get, dselect for the geeky,
dpkg for direct use, make-kpkg for kernel package, and what not?
You can simply upgrade the distro with two commands, and it works
perfectly. So, who said Debian is very tough? I am in love with
         Debian. ;-)
