I guess checkinstalll is only a neat replace for 'make uninstall' and it saves you a recompile on a different machine. In lack of dependency checking it is not guaranteed to work on a different machine but I suspect it was never inteded to be. A good packaging tool should allow dependency checking with an ability to override dependency(ies) as specified by the administrator.
