Easiest way to verify if your modem is a Winmodem or not is to fireup
minicom with the modem device file as an argument.
You said COM3? THat would be /dev/ttyS2
So
minicom /dev/ttyS2
THen type in a few modem commands...
at
at&v
etc...
If the modem responds in any way then you have a regular modem. If not,
then it may be a winmodem or the modem might not be enabled by the BIOS.
If it is a PNP modem, then try setting "PnP OS" in the bios to NO and
reboot and check again.
If the modem works, then you will need to use isapnptools to configure the
modem during boot
