If you have access to a mandrake 7.1/7.2 CD, you could boot into the rescue
image and run rescuepart (or something of that sort - take a look) It
analyzes the actual hard-disk layout and tries to guess partitions. Worked
well for me once. You could alternately try gpart ( I think ) that's supposed
to do something similar. Once you have the system u pand running, copy off
your partition table (the Ist 512 bytes of your device) and save it somewhere
safe. Next time it conks, just dd it back.
