If it has overwriten your partition theres nothing much you can do.
You can boot from a cd and try to mount the visible partitions one by one
and see which ones are ok. After ummounting those, do a fsck to verify
that they are really fine. So when you install linux you can keep those
partitions unformatted. If the /home has survived, thats a lot. I wasnt so
lucky.
BTW is your partition table ok. what does cfdisk say ?

you can try re-creating the extended partition giving the exact size.
Hope you are able to recover something. These crashes are awfull.

p.s ( they say norton disk doctor can fix some partition errors, if you
can atleast recreate the extended partition, you should be able to salvage
something from its underlying logical partitions )
