use your home directory area or rename /usr/src/linux to /usr/src/linux.old
{or whatsoever} and untar in /usr/src
do:
make mrproper
make xconfig #use menuconfig or config , its better
make dep
make bzImage #or anything else as per ur choice
make modules #if u have configured
make modules_install #ditto as above
