This is for VNC? (caught the thread a little late, sorry)
Modify the $HOME/.vnc/xstartup file to start whatever you want.
it starts twm and an xterm by default.
export DISPLAY, etc is only required when the X server is running on
the remote host and you're telling the client where to connect to.
