Did you maintain permissions when copying over the mail spool?
mjollnir:~ ls -ld /var/spool/mail/
drwxrwxrwt 2 root mail 1024 Jun 18 12:49 /var/spool/mail/
[that's chmod 1777, chmod +t /var/spool/mail/ by the way]
mjollnir:~ ls -l /var/spool/mail/suresh
-rw------- 1 suresh mail 153465 Jun 18 12:47 /var/spool/mail/suresh
A better solution would have been to symlink.
