The permissions were not preserved when you copied over
/var/spool/mail.old to /newhardisk/mail

Use tar with the -p switch to preserve the permissions like so:

cd /var/spool/mail.old
tar cvf - . && cd /newhardisk/mail/; tar xvf -


[WARNING!  I have'nt tried this.  Please try it out elsewhere before you
actually do it]
