Thanks for that response.I have figured out what had happened.the error
kept popping up even after reboots so i gave all the rc.* files a dekho,
but didnt find anything unusual.It then turned out that my friend had
fiddled with my .bash_profile and had added the line(hdparm - d 1
/dev/hda) there(he claims he didnt know what he was doing!!).i removed
that and system is working fine now.
