No you can achieve the same with APM ... ACPI on linux is not all that
good... I was never able to shutdown my machine as long as I was using
ACPI ! (I used it from 2.4.0 to 2.4.3 .... got fed up and switched back to
APM in 2.4.5)
And more importantly to use ACPI you need to have ACPI compliant hardware!
(while APM works with almost all hardware in the market today including
ACPI compliant ones!)
and for ACPI you also need to install the acpi daemon (acpid) !
