You can download it from the ftp / web sites of redhat / mandrake etc - but
as it is anywhere between 600 mb to 1.2 gb of download, I suggest you get a
CD - you can either buy the July 2001 pc quest issue - which has a redhat
linux CD set - or buy a linux version of your choice from someplace like
freeos.com

There are quite a few linux users in coimbatore (likely from PSG or other
colleges) - they would be reading this list and will likely help you out with
a CD - and installation help also :)

Yes, definitely.

> How much space does it occupy

If you can spare around 1 to 1.5 gb space on your hard disk it will be quite
convenient (enough space to work with, install some convenient applications
for you, etc). However, a simple, stripped down install of linux can easily
be done in a few hundred MB.

Not exactly. I'd suggest that you get a book like "Unix for dummies"
(despite the title, its a quite well written book). There are also several
"how to" documents available on your CD - or online at various places,
including linuxdocs.org

My personal favourite for people to get up and running with linux is the
guides by Prof Norm Matloff at <http://heather.cs.ucdavis.edu/~matloff>
