Thank you Sir, for the compliment. Kindly, also look for any
article on Richard M Stallman and GNU and FSF that you can get
from anywhere. There are a lot on the net.

It is indeed a pleasure and a surprise seeing you on the list
Sir, there are not many Senior citizens on Linux in the world!

For a start, do not download ... it is too large a project for
a "newbie", and secondly, not very suitable for our type of
telephone connection ... It would be much cheaper, and less
painful to do it from CDs initially. There are a lot of
distributions for sale. If you go down to Bangalore, you can
pick up a RedHat, Mandrake, SuSE or Caldera from Gangarams.
These distros are perhaps easier for a start-off. The Jul PC
Quest also has RedHat 7.1 on it. Alternatively you can get one
by post in Indian Rupees. Log on to htp://www.gtcdrom.com for
more info.

You definitely can. Perhaps you would be better off with some
first hand help at this stage ... there will surely be quite a
few Linux geeks at Coimbatore ...
There is a great book called Peter Norton's Complete guide to
Linux. It gives a very good overview to start with ..

About 2 Gigs for the whole thing with lots of room to play
around. 1 Gig would be the lower limit without compromising
functionality.

Just as easy as any other 640 mb download ! Since you would
not be in a position to do checksums at this stage, such an
effort may prove futile.

Yes, a retired medical Prof is considered technical enough !

Sir, please be free to come back on the list or on personal
mail if you need any specific help.
