Actually, at IITB, we had a few Sun machines, which NFS mounted home
directories under /usr. The home path would be
/usr/tmp_mnt/home/jwala/binand or similar (jwala being the machine
that actually had the home directory).
That is, it is admin configurable where home directories are
created. In RedHat Linux, edit the file /etc/defaults/useradd to
change where default home directories are created (and recorded in
/etc/passwd). You can use /dev/home for all the system cares.
Anyway, I could never get the hang of the NFS/NIS concept of
Sun's. yppasswd for changing password, it seems.
