Yes.  Just login as some random user (no need to login as root).  in one
console.  Open another console with alt-f1, login as some other user and
then type startx there.

Switch between the two consoles (now) with control alt f1 / ctrl alt f2.  If
you see just X startup data there, press alt f7 (on redhat) to bring back X

Better, stay in shell.  Boot to X only when necessary (rarely, as there's
always lynx for browsing, and command line icq clients) :)
