Hi,
It is not difficult to install Oracle 8.1.6 on Linux.
I got this CD from the Oracle 8i for Linux Starter Kit
by Oracle Press. I installed it on RH 6.2. It went
on fine without any problems. I followed the
instructions exactly as per the book. If you desire
to install it on RH 7.1, then you have to do a couple
of workarounds.
The glibc 2.1 compatability packages have to be
installed such as compat-glibc, compat-egcs and
compat-libs. After these packages are installed, you
have to run the following commands before running the
Oracle installer
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
cd /usr/i386-glibc21-linux/bin
./i386-glibc21-linux-env.sh
This will fool the Oracle Installer to refer to glibc
2.1 headers rather than the glibc 2.2 headers.
Once the installation program starts, it will continue
without any problems.
But please be advised that if you desire to try out
Oracle 9i for Linux (the 30-day trial copy can be
downloaded from technet.oracle.com 1.3 GB in size
including the pdf docs), it cannot be installed on RH
distros. Red Hat pulled out of the alliance with
Oracle during the development stages of 9i. Suse
co-operated with Oracle and Oracle 9i is installable
on Suse Linux 7.1 with kernel 2.4.4 and glic 2.2 only.
No other distro is supported as of now.
