I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your problem, but you could try to get
more information out of pppd about the problem by adding a "debug" and
"kdebug 7" to your /etc/ppp/options and adding the following line to your
/etc/syslog.conf:
daemon.debug /var/log/pppdebug
After that, when you face a similar problem, your /var/log/pppdebug should
give you a more detailed explanation of where the problem might be.
