OK but is it possible to have just the X server running somewhere in the
background without any kind of window manager running. This will also solve
the purpose as then to run mplayer, you just need to fire mplayer from the
shell prompt

Is there a good place to learn snarky PERL TECHNIQUES ? One of
my favorite is http://webtechniques.com where Randall Schwartz
contributes a monthly sample, explaining line-by-line what his
code does, and why. (Look under "Programming with Perl" in the
archives.)
