I am sure, there must be some console based  mp3 players on
the net ... you don't have to be on X just to play music in
the background !

On the same box ? Or over an intranet ? On the same box, you
need to start a second X session ... see LOST #052.

To know the contents of a .deb file, in systems without dpkg
$ar -x foo.deb
This should give you a file called data.tar.gz which contains 
the binary files. 
$tar -ztvf data.tar.gz | less
