the message screen is nothing but a .pcx file suitably somewhere 320x240 pixel in size try opening the /boot/message file in gimp and edit it . you can also create your own file ,also there is a gimp script available on the net search for "lilo splash screen "and find under fresh meat project . though i am not able to find the mklilomsg binary anywhere that is referred on the site ,but it works without it too .
