Later versions of LILO allow a bitmap to be displayed.

There is a 'bitmap' option that can be used in lilo.conf.


More information on this is available in the LILO source. There's a file
called README.bitmaps that explains the format of the bitmaps.


And...
The video hardware _is_ completely initialized (for standard modes) by the
BIOS before LILO gets control. So using standard graphical video modes it
is possible to display images on screen before the OS actually loads.

Getting the video hardware to its final operating mode (in X or in
Windows) is done by the video driver(s) within the OS. These modes are in
most cases hardware specific and require a deeper knowledge of the card's
capabilities.
