both lilo and grub seem to be capable of loading images/splash screens...
without affecting the kernel.(I managed to get that to work on a grub
floppy.. grub on mbr still doesn't work for me :( )

How they do it..  I don't know.... must be something similiar to what M$FT
does with in windows.. because the video hardware isn't fully initialised
when the startup screen comes.
