What worked was changing the line HOSTNAME=farzaan.localdomain to HOSTNAME=farzaan in /etc/sysconfig/network and restarting network. It really helps to have the same OS installed on two machines, one can compare files and work out problems easier. thanx for the response, regards, Sharukh. btw, I have by now installed pcqlinux atleast half a dozen times (on different machines) but everytime, despite setting the hostname at the time of the install, I have had to manually add the hostname to /etc/sysconfig/network.
