The way it was done was, X would point to another program called Xwrapper, which would run the particular X-server suited for your card with super-user permissions. This is the setup that you probably have on your PC, now . To change over to X.4.1 you need to do 2 things. i ) make X point to the X.4.* binary ii) setup the XF86Config-4 file which this binary reads. If you have allready setup your XF86Config for X.3.* XF86Config-4 wouldnt be much different. Except you would have to load the different modules.
