the older X servers had different binaries for the different chipsets/videocard
Moreover they needed to be running with root's execution permission.

The way it was done was, X would point to another program called Xwrapper,
which would run the particular X-server suited for your card with
super-user permissions.

This is the setup that you probably have on your PC, now .

To change over to X.4.1 you need to do 2 things.

i ) make X point to the X.4.* binary
ii) setup the XF86Config-4 file which this binary reads.

If you have allready setup your XF86Config for X.3.* XF86Config-4 wouldnt
be much different. Except you would have to load the different
modules. The default XF86Config-4 file ( /etc/X11/ XF86Config-4) is quite
well commented, that together with the man pages should be enough for you
to migrate

hope it helps
