This is definitely an [OT] thing, The BSNL-VSNL dispute has
started affecting users, and it is perhaps appropriate that
the list be informed of recent events.

Those of us at places around Delhi (Raj, Har, UP) were all
linked to the VSNL nde server through C-DOT lines. On 19 th
Nov I started getting authentication failure at log in. I
contacted the local C-DOT/ BSNL folk on phone after persis-
tance of the problem beyond 48 hrs. I was informed that the
nde server has been "disconnected". To know the exact prob-
lem I was advised to contact VSNL Delhi.

No intimation of any kind was received by me or any of the
other users on the sudden stoppage of services. I was later
informed, that all present subscibers would "soon" be shif-
ted to sanchar.net ! To contact them after Monday (26 Nov)!

Quite fed up with the way things are done by the GOI ISP
vendors, I picked up hclinfinet package off the showcase. I
am connected today. After connecting I found that I could
ping the nde servers without probs, and even downloaded all
my mail and despatched things as before ... It is obvious
that because of reasons not notified, the CDOT - VSNL link
has been abruptly severed. Users are immaterial ! Ethics of
commercial aspects a non-issue.

We would be taking requisite actions as necessary. This is
just to inform the folk who are dependent upon links with
these agencies, that these folk may pull the plug at any
moment ! You may not even get a notice ...

Bish.

To change a user's personal info details (like those produced
by 'finger' command, like full name, Tele no, login-shell etc)
already on the computer as and when required, use the "chfn"
utility.
