If it's single console, why not log out? It's like dos. Closing all programs 
before you shut down. You need to type username is the only extra effort... I 
would prefer a waiting for login system rather than locking it..

Of course if your have some work that takes much to setup, then locking is good. 
But from console you can *interact* with only one program at a time. You can 
safely nohup background jobs so that they will keep running even after you are 
logged out.. Seems possible to me in most cases...

Of course OS's like freebsd doesn't clear screen after logout(Yes I know 
.bash_logout but was too lazy to expect a default..)
