after unzipping, enter the mplayer source dierctory and do a 
"./configure --disable-gcc-checking". when you're asked for a 
keyword, give "gcc 2.96 is broken". that will compile it.
the gcc 2.96 warning is perhaps exaggerated. i compiled it with that, 
and it runs faultlessly on my system.
also, don't forget to download the w32codecs.zip package  from the 
mplayer site and unzip it in /usr/lib/win32 BEFORE you do ./configure.
if you want the timer and volume slider (in non-gui mode), also 
download any one font package from the same site. install it 
according to directions in
<mplayer source directory>/DOCS/documentation.htm
if you have svgalib installed, try the console mode with
mplayer -vo svga <filename>.
it's the best way to run mplayer, for my money
after "make" and "make install", don't forget to copy
<mplayer source directory>/etc/codecs.conf
to
<your home directory>/.mplayer
that's it.
