When u play the video u don't get it streched to the screen from left to right. Some part of the screen on left and right is black and video is in between. In case of true full screen the image is streched to the right edge of left and right, thus viewing the video is much more enjoyable. mplayer -aspect 4:3 gives u this true screen. May not work for some files though.
