Moved ~/.galeon/ and ~/.mozilla/ out of their regular places so that they could be re-created. Still, the problem persists.
As somebody mentioned on debian-user, pointed my browser at http://bewitched.com and was able to view the animations there. So, java plugins are working correctly.
