Linux has lots of stuff you can use for this. There used to be a guy called Indraneel Majumdar (from CDFD Hyderabad, the EMBNET node in India) who used to post here a few months back. He's now stateside somewhere (in Dallas I think). Run e2fsck as well since this calls the badblocks prog to write to bad blocks inode. On an unmounted partition, from rescue disk do: #e2fsck -c -p .....
