Hello all,
I have an intel i810 Chipset on which both graphics and
sound are working. Support for both of them have been built into a
custom kernel compiled by me. Now I have disabled the AC97 Sound on the
motherboard. This is because I want to overclock my machine( I have done
it successfully) and this results in the PCI bus running at its maximum
of 41MHz(124/124/41) . At this speed the Audio controller(AC 97) is not
detected by the BIOS at startup and therefore I have disabled it and
intend putting in a new PCI sound card. To me the few MHz of clock speed
is more important than the price of a new sound card let me make it
clear. The network card is detected as well as the USB Hub. The network
card is functioning very well even at this PCI speed(41MHz) . My problem
now is
1> How do I disable the existing kernel audio drivers. Would just
recompiling the kernel without support for i810 audio do or in addition
do I have to modify any config files ?
2> Which is a good PCI 32 Bit sound card which works under linux . I
dont want anything big. Just plain stuff for listening to mp3's etc.
Should cost under Rs.1000.
3> Configuring the New Sound card under Linux. Would running
"sndconfig" be enough or what else has to be done ?
P.S: Actually I am not overclocking my CPU in the real sense . I have a
PIII 800 MHz 133 FSB CPU but an i810 board which supports only 66MHz
and 100MHz FSB's. But fortunately through the BIOS you can stretch the
FSB to 124MHz. The good news is that it works pretty well save for the
audio. In the process I have got the bogomips up by a good 220 units and
/sbin/hdparm shoot up(136.17/24.13). My kernel is 2.4.3.The motherboard
is a Priya i810E. Another interesting fact is that this beats a Mercury
i180FST 133FSB by quite a margin.
Thanks and regards,
G.Sriram.
Trichy.
