My favourite box at home is still my P-75 (32 mb RAM).
I am emotionally attached to it. I learnt Linux on it
when this box was the best/ fastest in the market !
There are my recommendations:
a) Distro ANY (avoid kernel 2.4.x) ... blocks a lot of
memory ... and speed (on my box) is actually slower
than 2.2.xx ! The following are optimal:
a) Debian potato
b) Slackware 7.1
c) RH 6.2 had some security probs (avoid)
d) SuSE 6.3
b) Stick to console for most of your stuff. You will
get things done faster that the fastest box under
the fastest GUI.
Console recommendations:
o Mail - sendmail/ fetchmail/ procmail/ mutt or
pine. nmh if you are a script whizz !
o Browser - 1) links 2) lynx (install both, lynx is
needed by several programs for -dump function)
o Messenger- all suck (under console) for yahoo may
try ari-yahoo
o Word processor - None. If you are prepared for
text processing, lout with your preferred editor.
lout is small, makes ps directly, and much easier
syntax than TeTeX (though less powerful, but ps
output just as good).
GUI recommendations:
o fvwm2 or blackbox (I have tried 09 WMs before I
make this recommendation) ... Both KDE and gnome
will work, but is rather resource hungry.
o Mail - tkrat or kmail. Both can share your mutt
mbox type files
o Browser - opera (single static binary, and much
smaller than the others)
o Word Processor- Abiword (works on 9x Word docs).
o Messenger - All suck. Try and choose.
Just my 2p

Sub : Capturing startx output LOST #008
To capture startx output : '$startx 1>startx.log 2>&1'
... This will dump a bunch of text to the file "startx.log"
$less startx.log ... to view the results in an xterm.
