Yeah, that's true. In ver 1 of KDE,  this  rule  set amendments
were not easy. Don't know what it is like in kppp ver 2

Yeah, that is precisely what connect does, takes the inputs from
/var/log/messages, and output from pppstats (a part of ppp)  and
keeps it in a monthly database. Only raw data is  saved, but the
computation of the statistics is done at run-time.

Being based on basic installed programs/ utilities, it  needs no
external software installed, and has the  obvious  advantages of
extensibility, being a script.
