I believe partitions can be labelled. The new RedHat versions use LABELS 
to refer  to partitions instead of /dev/sda1 and things like that. What 
it helps in is that if your hard disk crashes you just format another 
hard disk - transfer the data, label them approriately and plug it is - 
no need of changing configurations anywhere.
