You can't probe the mouse unless you know where it is connected.
Fortunately, this involves looking behind the case - as you've already
done.

Yes, this is a big help.  A round connector means a PS/2 mouse.  Serial
mice generally have a 9 pin D connector.

You want to either make /dev/mouse a symlink to /dev/psaux or set your
mouse device to /dev/psaux when it asks you in Xconfig....
