Before configuring under X, try determining what type of mouse you have
1) If it has a 9 pin D connector, it is a serial mouse
2) If it has a 25 pin D , then it is parallel/serial mouse
3) If it plugs directly into the motherboard then, it has to be
configured differently.
4) If it is round , may be it is a ps/2 mouse
These are the 4 different species of mice I have come accross.
Each has to be configured independenly.
Serial mice are usually on ttySx
x being your com ports (on dos)
ps/2 mice can be captured ! on /dev/psaux
Support for mice on the motherboard have to be built into the kernel,
refer to the kernel sources for more info
Now, make sure that the symlink /dev/mouse is pointing to the right
device, you can try the mouse config at prompt and then convince proceed
to test your protocols
