I would recommend upgrading to SaMBa 2.2.x stable releases (no alphas, no
betas)

Which 2.4.x release have you tried out?
The one I am working on 2.4.17 rocks like anything, you could go on to that.
I bet you would notice the performance difference the moment you boot the
new kernel.
