Go to 2.4.17 - stable as hell.  Also - I dont see any hassle running samba
2.2.x on a 2.x series kernel (though you could stay current with it - 2.2.20
right?)

I guess the advantage you have is that Nikk should have left a rather stable
setup at iimk to begin with ;)  Nice to build on ...
