Keep your self away from oracle on linux, unless you know what are you doing.
Oracle 9i is whooping 1.2 GB, and install size would be more than 2 GB. Oracle 8i on Compaq proliant server with 1 GB of ram takes up any where 30-55 min for just data base creation. BTW oracle is not distro specific, although oracle claims it. I was not able to install oracle on debian ( the installation was to crash, reminding of my old window days). Then I installed Dead Rat 6.2 on separate partition, installed Oracle there and then copied entire /home/oracle to debian along with two files in /etc. And Now oracle works on debian too. Finally oracle is most stupid software (at least on linux) , the reasons... 1. All excitable are more than 3000 Kb, meaning they are statically compiled. 2. It leaves many zombies, even after data base is shutdown. 3. The installation carries its own perl, apache, jdk ete etc under /home/oracle. 4. It eats up all machine resources, with least regard to other processes. Regards, Mukund Deshmukh Beta Computronics Pvt. Ltd.
