if you have "wvdial spawning pppd" it will hold the terminal hostage until you disconnect... Hit Alt-F2 to Alt-F6 and login on any of the virtual consoles (Alt-F1 will be the console that wvdial is running on).. and you can do anything you want to. If you want to do it in a single console.. you'll have to call wvdial is a difference fashion ... ie., have "pppd spawning wvdial" (wvdial acts as a replacement for 'chat') .. in which case you won't see any output on your screen and you can launch pppd as a background process and regain control of the terminal. I'd go with the first method... a lot more simple and it'll easier to disconnect too.
