That's perfectly ok as long as you want to save time - and apply all the
related patches cleanly.
Do note that the 2.4.7 this guy is referring to is a redhat patched kernel -
so applying patches for the stock ftp.kernel.org kernel may / may not work.

To what extent? This goes right back to the fundamentals of an earlier set
