1. Qmail is more than usually anal about files in its mail queue, makes
doubly / trebly sure that they are secure. Slows things down (and tends to
bog the filesystem down in some cases). Especially when you are passing mail
on to another host.
2. Again on queue management, qmHandle sucks rather bad in moving or deleting
mail from a live mail queue - seems to prefer that qmail-smtpd be shut down
first, before you delete mail from the queue (or takes a helluva long time to
do its stuff, if qmail-smtpd is running). On the other hand, qtool.pl
-dqueue-id in sendmail, and exim -Mrm queue-id in exim works quite well
indeed ... This is especially sucky when you keep moving mail to backup
queues (from multiple queue directories) - and deleting spam from a live
queue (sets of perl scripts to grep mailq for patterns, and feed the queue
ids to qtool.pl).
3. Spamfiltering in qmail is a nightmare (yup - I know about rblsmtpd,
badmailfrom, whatever). Keeping track of about ten files in
/var/qmail/control gets to be a nightmare. Having to patch and recompile
qmail for various things which would just require a config file change in
sendmail is another issue :)
4. Personal preference, sort of ... I wouldn't normally touch qmail with a
twenty foot pole except that it is used rather extensively here at work :(
